Becoming a Big Fish in a Big Pond I remember that my biggest hesitation whether to attend the University of Illinois was this: The student body is made up of about 33,500 undergraduates. Today, Im discussing how I have made myself an impactful individual in such a large student body. This is the story of becoming a big fish in a big pond. Photo from Rachel Hernandez The first step to truly individualizing your education is to make yourself stand out. For me, this meant making connections before stepping foot on campus. Prior to my acceptance to Illinois, I attended as many prospective student events as I possibly could. This allowed me to introduce myself to faculty members, leaving a good first impression. Within my first few weeks on campus as a freshman, I sent emails introducing myself to a select group of individuals: advisors, professors, and more. Many of these people I had met previously, so I wanted to keep my connections going strong. I also made a point to meet my advisor in person right away, before she met so many students that she wouldnt remember me. To this day, I am still close with many of these people, including the assistant dean of the College of Education. As I continued into my sophomore year, I volunteered for various events within the College of Education. From prospective student luncheons to taking over the University of Illinois Snapchat (boy, was that fun!), going the extra mile is the best way to market yourself. Camp X is a secret spy training camp that trains Canadians as spy’s to fight at Germany during the World War II. Camp X is a restricted camp that is put near a forest and also has a giant tower for training for spies to parachute. Camp X is one of the many places that Germans attempt to sabotage. Camp X is a 17 acre park named after the British Security Coordination (Intrepid Park). The water in Colbert’s Creek is somewhat warm and purified. This shows, the pollution rate of the lake between the camp is quite low and is purified. Problems, Challenges: One of the major problems George and Jack encountered had a positive and negative impact on both of them. Firstly, as George and Jack were playing make-believe war, they encountered a highly restricted camp in which they got caught. They were escorted home and asked never to return. There are so many things that children can learn through cultural enrichment. Activities through language, music, art, and dance can enhance a child’s exposure to different ethnicities other than their own. Since the establishment of No Child Left Behind, Congressional endorsements have restated the value of art and music in education as an important and vital element in quality education for all students (U. S. 2005). However, those were just mere words. Since NCLB, arts educational instructional time has decreased by 16% (Heilig, Cole, Aguilar, 2010). Well that increase effects the lower performing schools which are usually populated with low-income students and students of color (Heilig, Cole, Aguilar, 2010). The mere benefit of these various programs are being overlooked because the teaching of art education has also contributed to an increase of self-esteem, the acquisition of job skills, and the development of creative thinking, problem solving and communication skills (NGA, 2002). All students crave a time to be creative and express themselves. Being in a classroom that is strictly knowledge and skills based can sometimes become quite mundane and boring. When there is music or art incorporated in the curriculum, this can become a great outlet for them. In recent years there has been a huge emphasis on standardized tests. Administrators, teachers, and students are becoming pressured on making that grade. Education of the arts has proven to help reduce and manage their stress level (Creedon, 2011). There has also been cognitive research that showed when there is a well-rounded structured of music and art education program it enhances the emotional well-being of children for a readiness of learning (Creedon, 2011). Here is the problem, just recently this month, the Interior Appropriations bill wants so cut NEA, National Education of Arts, to 135 million (Advocate, 2011). The U. S. House of Appropriations Committee just approved to cut 20 million earlier this month (Advocate, 2011). Where does this leave the students of America? It seems that no one is thinking about their education and fundamental it is to have the arts involved in the curriculum. In the state of Texas, there will only be a budget of 3. 7 million dollars for the next two years for the arts, which ultimately gives a fifty percent reduction in grants and thirty percent reduction in staff (TCA, 2011). This reduction of funding affects everyone. Teachers will be loosing their jobs and more importantly the students are not receiving a well-rounded education. In order to not let this problem occur any further, as American citizens, it is imperative that letters are written to the congressman, senators, and governors. They are the only one that could change things with the state funding. Sticking together as a community can bring it to their attention that arts in education does matter. The days of protesting is not ancient, it can still make an impact on things. The goal is to inform Congress that there should be at least a funding level of 53 million for the Arts in Education program within the U. S. Department of Education (Advocate, 2011). Those wonderful programs are able to help teachers, all students, and the community with art collaboration in education. Another solution is for the local districts to write grants to keep the arts in their school. The Bill Graham Foundation is a well-known foundation that provides grants for the areas of music in the arts of education (Arts, 2011). This grant can give $4000 for any program promoting arts in education. This may not seem like a lot, but just think, that is only one out of a thousands programs out there that will provide funding for education of the arts. Grants like these can also give students the opportunity to explore multicultural educational field trips that were not available before. Several studies have proven that art education is a vital component to have a well-rounded student. Writing grants, letters, and even protesting can all help ensure that the arts will increase in the schools instead of decrease. The students should learn about other cultures and one of the best ways is through the arts. There are many ways that obesity can be helped it Just all starts with motivation and some hard work. Obesity is an ongoing struggle with Americans and society is not helping at all. I mean yes they say go out and exercise and get rock hard abs for the beach. But then you see signs on the road that says McDonalds dollar menu exit 160. Everyone knows that the way the economy is today they would much rather save some money and work for money than work out or eat healthier. People think they are invincible and harmful effects that come with obesity will not come to them. What some people do not understand is that there are many affects that come with being overweight all the ay from stress, diabetic, and even death. In this paper I will talk about ways to exercise, eat healthy, affects it can have on your body and some common facts that obesity causes and how fast food restaurants have an affects in this. 58 million people are overweight, 40 million are obese, and 3 million are morbidly obese. So that makes 8 out of 10 people you meet are overweight. Just think about it next time you are in a crowd of people. The reason this is true is because 78% of Americans do not meet the basic activity level recommended to be fit. There is a difference in being overweight and being obese, the way you find out is by figuring out your body mass index. For a considerably healthy person is between 18 and 25. Overweight is 25 to 20 and being obese is anything over 30. If a person wants to find out what category they are in it is easy you can go to a health clinic or you can calculate it yourself. Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the last 30 years. This makes it 1 out of every 3 American kids you see are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity is not the number 1 health concern with parents that even beat smoking and drug abuse. Today obesity has a wide range of health problems that were not seen till the children were older. Types of health problems that can occur when children start out obese or overweight are: high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol. While being overweight you are putting a lot of stress on your Joints and bones more than they can normally handle. With this it can lead too high risk of developing arthritis. Also it is said that you can have sleep apneas which can cause you to snore or even lose some sleep. It can increase the risk of having breast cancer in men and women.
